There are people who are light-skinned enough to “pass” as white, meaning they could choose to act like they’re white and have white privilege. But in the Jim Crow era, if you had any black heritage at all, you were considered black and didn’t have the same rights as white people. The n-word was more acceptable back then, and saying “black” was offensive. Some people refused to “pass” as white, some only did it when it was convenient, and some tried to completely forget their racial background and become white.

One will like this book. It was a fun read, and some of the scenes were really vivid.

There are some intense scenes in the basement and the opening scene with Christopher Waltz.

The book highlights Segregation was a time when white people and black people were not allowed to use the same services. Black people were not allowed to use a lot of the services that white people could use.

Her old friend Claire, who is also black but pretending to be white, recognizes her and invites her to a party. At the party, Irene meets Claire’s husband, who is white and doesn’t know that his wife is black. Irene starts to worry that she will be discovered and kicked out of the white community.
